Amelia's Adventures at the Zoo

Amelia's Adventures at the Zoo.

Little Amelia has an active imagination. She loves to sit in class and imagine she's flying a space ship, or is the captain of a pirate ship. But today, today is going to be different. Today Amelia is going to the zoo! Imagine the possibilities!

Amelia was sitting in her room and imagining herself swinging with the monkeys, dancing with the hippos, and sipping tea with the tigers. Amelia's mom called to her from downstairs, "Its time to go!"

Amelia ran downstairs, threw on her coat and bounded out the door, much like the gazelles she thought she might get to see at the zoo.

The car pulled up to the gates at the zoo. They were so tall! They must keep giants here! Amelia had her face pressed so hard to the window with excitement that her nose was squished!

When her mom parked the car, Amelia unbuckled herself and jumped out. "Let's go, mom!" she said. She took her mom's hand and dragged her to the ticket booth.

The man at the booth reminded Amelia of an old grizzly bear. He had a large forehead with a slanting nose, big round cheeks, and a huge smile that showed all of his teeth. Amelia started giggling. Her mom paid for their tickets and they went inside.

The first cage they stopped at was for the crocodiles. Amelia imagined herself playing croquet with the crocodiles. But wait!

The crocodiles were cheating! Those crazy crocodiles were cheating at croquet! Amelia grabbed her mom's hand and pulled her to the next cage. She had had enough of those crazy crocodiles!

Amelia could hear what was coming up in the next cage. Elephants! She could hear them trumpeting already! Amelia imagined herself playing in a band with the elephants. Amelia would play the guitar and sing, and the elephants would play their trumpety trunks. Their music would be a hit and they would be so famous. But wait!

Those energetic elephants were trampling the stage! They were crushing the instruments and breaking everything! Amelia grabbed her mom's hand and pulled her to the next cage. She had had enough of those energetic elephants.

As Amelia and her mother walked to the next cage Amelia could hear a deep rumbling sound. They rounded the corner and Amelia saw tigers! Amelia got so excited she started jumping. Suddenly Amelia was on a stage tap dancing with the tigers! The crowd was cheering and tossing flowers on to the stage. But wait!

The tigers started getting tangled! Their talis got twisted, their feet got flustered and they fell into a twisted tangled mess on the floor! Amelia grabbed her mothers hand and pulled her to the next cage. She had had enough of those tangled tigers.

Amelia and her mom approached the next cage. Amelia spotted penguins! All of a sudden Amelia was running her very own restaurant, and all the waiters were penguins! The food was great, and everyone loved her restaurant. But wait!

The playful penguins were eating the food! Not only that, they were using the ice cubes to build a slide and they were getting water all over the place! Amelia grabbed her mother's hand and pulled her to the next cage. Amelia had had enough of those playful penguins.

Amelia and her mother were approaching the last cage in the zoo. Amelia was really hoping that the animals in this cage would be more fun. As Amelia and her mother walked in front of the cage, Amelia saw a whole herd of giraffes! Amelia's eyes lit up. Giraffes were her most favourite animal!

Amelia was climbing up the long legs of the giraffes, all the way up to the top of their heads. She would slide down their long necks to their backs. What fun it was to play with giraffes! The tickle of their hair on the backs of her legs as she slid down their necks made her laugh very loudly.

"Amelia, what are you laughing at?" asked Amelia's mother. Amelia told her all about the cheating crocodiles, the energetic elephants, the tangled tigers, and the playful penguins. She told her mom that the gentle giraffes were the most fun because they let her slide down their necks and their hair tickled her legs and made her laugh.

Amelia's mother laughed as she took Amelia's hand and said, "Amelia honey, you have one wild imagination. Let's go home." As Amelia and her mother turned to walk away both of them took one last look at the giraffes. But wait!

The giraffes winked! Amelia giggled as her mother looked from Amelia to the giraffes to Amelia to the giraffes then back to Amelia. "But-- how?" Amelia giggled more and started to lead her startled looking mother back to the car.

"Like you said mom. Just a wild imagination."

The End
