ACK! I must get better at this!!!
Okay...attempt number...gazillion??? at trying to keep my blog somewhat up to date lol.Matt and I are buying a house!!! We're both very excited at the prospect of buying a house. We got our preapproval so now it's just a matter of looking at houses and being lucky enough to snag one. Not as easy as it might sound. This city is terrible for real estate. It's getting to the point where there are bidding wars happening on houses. Not enough houses available for the amount of people in the market to purchase said houses. Should be interesting to say the least.
We looked at one house today which looked nice from the outside. We went in the mudroom and even it showed promise. The "laminate" flooring was really a vinyl flooring with laminate pattern, but hey, that can be fixed. We went into the huge kitchen. Lots of counter space and cupboards, room for our fridge and stove. The floors were vinyl flooring again, but once again that can be replaced. The living room was attached to the kitchen. The living room, which in comparison to the one we currently have, was quite large. This was real laminate flooring but I have to admit, very cheap and not well taken care of. This could also be fixed. The paint was a colour I liked so that wouldn't have been an issue right off the bat. Big windows, front door out onto a little porch, so far it was showing promise. Bedroom number one...small. Barely room for a double bed with bedside tables, and a dresser. But it would just be a spare room, not a huge deal. Bathroom....a normal size bathroom, nothing spectacular, but larger than what we currently have. This was a plus. The minus? Lavender toilet and tub...YUCK!! Second bedroom...about the same size as the first one, same deal. Except there was an access panel to the pipes for the bathtub. Oh and a few holes in the drywall. One whole wall in this room would have needed to be replaced with new drywall. Not unachievable, but the repair list seems to be growing. We moved on to the master bedroom. There was a small linen closet right before the master bedroom. This was a plus because we currently use our storage closet as our linen closet. Anyway, the master bedroom wasn't huge, but it was big enough for the furniture Matt and I have right now. But not much else. One small window, again, not a big issue because you just sleep in the room anyways. It let in the same light we get right now. This room seemed in pretty decent shape. But, the worst was yet to come. Our real estate agent had been preparing us for the basement, and I have to admit I wasn't quite ready for what I saw.
We descended into the basement. Can you believe that I had to duck to get down the stairs. Once I was down in the basement I could stand up but just barely. You could imagine what poor 6 foot tall Matt looked like while we were down there. Head bent, not able to stretch up....not a good sign. The laundry room was a laundry room. It had hook ups, shelves and access to all the necessary utilities. The "4th bedroom" across the hall was really just a glorified closet. Choppy ceilings, Matt REALLY couldn't stretch in this room. Barely good enough for a kids playroom. But this wasn't the end of it. Oh no...there's more. There was a very plain and almost undetectable doorway at the end of the staircase. And in all honesty I missed it when we went by the first time. The agent opened the door and there it was.....a huge rock in the basement. A perfectly good basement gone to waste on a giant freakin' rock. You could see where water had run down, not huge amounts but enough to cause concern. The furnace was kept under here, as was the hot water heater. There was absolutely nothing that could be done with this space to make it useable. We were all hunched over talking, trying not to hit our heads on the floor joists when I just started laughing and said "I feel like I'm standing in a hobbit house!" I personally don't want to have my own personal hobbit house, no matter how fun it may be for kiddies. A definite no on this one. Bring on the next one!!!!
